Sex on the Internet

It looks like ICANN, the non-profit group that manages the Internet's naming and number systems meeting this week in San Francisco, will today finally render a verdict on whether to allow a .xxx as a generic top-level domain, a debate that has raged for years. The National Journal's Juliana Gruenwald runs down the debate.
But sometimes a TLD isn't just a TLD, and that's the case here. The battle over allowing a porn-themed top-level domain on the Internet is something of a proxy for the debate over who -- ICANN? The U.S. government? The world's nation states? Global geeks? -- should have a say over how the Internet gets run. Stay tuned for the ICANN vote.
