NASA and Etsy Get Their Space Crafting On
BY Nancy Scola | Friday, March 18 2011
If you had to pick a federal agency to partner with hipster craft site Etsy, you'd probably pick NASA, what with their Foursquare check-ins from space, frequent tweetups, and plethora of apps. And you'd be right. Over at the Atlantic, Michelle Legro points us to the fact that tonight is the judging round in NASA's cleverly named "Space Craft" contest, commemorating the ending of the Space Shuttle Program, that invited Etsy craftmakers to whip up hand-made items evocative of space, spaceflight, and general universe exploration. The Etsy audience is a desirable one for NASA; the agency points out that out of the site's nearly 6 million members, 96% are women, most of whom are under 35. Winners get a trip to an upcoming NASA launch, and, just maybe, a chance to see their handiwork go on a space flight. Legro picks out some great highlights and low lights amongst the finalists, but I dunno, I'm kinda partial to the cuddly needle-felted version of Hubble Servicing Mission 4.
