Missouri Lawmakers Take a Step Back on 'Facebook Law'

The Missouri Senate has given initial approval to a revision of that state's so-called "Facebook Law" that rolls back a measure prohibiting teachers from having private online communications with students, the Associated Press reports. (Via Houston Chronicle)
New language that would amend the existing law would instead require school districts to publish guidelines on student-teacher interaction, and for those guidelines to include policies on communication through online media.
This whole kerfuffle started as a legislative response to several Missouri teachers being fired for alleged sexual misconduct in the early 2000s, some of whose cases involved online messaging. Teachers fought back with a lawsuit and a public relations campaign; a judge put a stay on implementing provisions of the law that restricted student-teacher communication online; legislators decided to revise the law.
