Is 'Government Data' a Growth Industry?

In light of the recent debate over federal funding for Data.gov and other sites, Drew Conway parses CrunchBase for the overlap between firms working in "government" and "data." He finds a drop off in the last few years. "Clearly, starting in the late 1990′s and through the mid-2000′s there was a huge rise in the number of companies working in this space," writes the NYU poli sci PhD student. "Since then, however, there has been a decrease." Conway's wondering why.
