Craig Newmark Campaigns for Military Families

BY Nick Judd | Tuesday, June 28 2011

Today, Craig Newmark of craigslist announced in a blog post that he will be using his new craigconnects initiative to bolster the work of folks who are supporting veterans and military families.

Announced in March, craigconnects is Newmark's an initiative to use his resources and position to do some good in the world for the next 20 years of his life. Or, as he puts it in todays blog post, "to do a better job of standing up for stuff I believe in."

Here's what Newmark will be doing next month:

So, I’m spending July helping to raise awareness and promote the efforts of people and groups who support military families and veterans, who really get the job done. (Hey, please focus on the “getting real stuff done” part; raising awareness, by itself, not so useful.)

My root motivation: help troops and their families, who, I feel, are willing to go somewhere and risk taking a bullet to protect me. Least I can do is help out this way. So, the deal is my first craigconnects campaign, month long, from June 28-July 31.

Newmark will also donate a total of $100,000 to Iraq & Afghanistan Veterans of America, The Intrepid Family of Foundations, Blue Star Families and the Bob Woodruff Foundation, based on the number of donations they receive during the campaign, which launches today.

During the fundraising challenge, Newmark and a few notable guests — Eddie Money is namechecked in a press release — will do outreach online and through social media for these organizations. His team will also work with each organization to flesh out their profiles on Guidestar, Charity Navigator and Great Nonprofits, all sites that people use to find — and investigate — nonprofits.

Newmark promises that this is the first of other campaigns that will use his new craigconnects platform.
