Suddenly we've gone from wondering about the next iteration of Change.gov to wondering about the real identity of Senate Candidate Five, as prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald dubbed the mystery Illinois politician in announcing today's stunning indictment of Governor Rod Blagojevich for attempting to sell President-Elect Obama's open U.S. Senate seat.
For political junkies of the wired variety, this story has it all - wiretaps, vulgarity, a planned shakedown of Warren Buffett, a bunch of redacted (and apparently prominent) names, and the Chicago Cubs - and the links to follow on memeorandum seemed endless this afternoon.
Naturally, there were two distinct reactions on the political blogs - call it "stupid" vs. "sinister" - presaging a neat switch from inside defenders to outside attackers (and vice versa) depending on which party you support. There's a new blogger fault line out there, and we may as well get used to it. The reaction of the lefty blogs is best summarized by Kevin Drum's main theme:
"...the guy has been under investigation for three years by the same prosecutor who convicted both Scooter Libby and the previous governor of Illinois, but he was merrily blathering away to friends anyway about selling off Barack Obama's senate seat to the highest bidder? What kind of fucking moron is this guy?"
On the right, a more - shall we say - ominous drumbeat began its rhythm. Jennifer Rubin had the typical line:
Now would be a good time for the press to perk up and act like an independent media rather than the Obama press office. Where’s the next David Gregory shouting impertinent questions at Obama’s press secretary? There are plenty to ask and so far no answers.
Yep, if you picked "major distraction" for a thousand dollars, the circle gets the square in the Obama transition (yes,, I'm mixing game show metaphors there). We can expect both of these lines of Blago Blog attack to continue.
Meanwhile, the organizing continues - Blago isn't the most popular governor in the and Citizens of Illinois against Rod Blagojevich on Facebook already has 2,500 members. Meanwhile, the Gov's own Facebook page still has his Thanksgiving visit to a church supper.
On Twitter, both Blagojevich and Illinois were top ten searches, and the banter ran fast and furious.
