Palin Emails Will Be a Searchable Database

BY Nick Judd | Wednesday, June 1 2011

Alaska will release thousands of pages of Sarah Palin's emails from her time as governor. Wait, what? Pages? Emails are electronic — why should there be pages at all?

Turns out that the Alaskan state government will print out something like 24,000 pages of records, per the Anchorage Daily News, then redact and ship the records to the newspapers and other media outlets that requested them — at a cost of $725.97 per outlet — because the state "doesn't have the software to electronically redact information from emails."

Mother Jones, and ProPublica have the technology to take the printed emails and use them to compile a searchable database, though — and that's what they're going to do.
