The Feds' Lesson in Drupal. Also, You Get to Blow Up Stuff.

BY Nancy Scola | Friday, April 1 2011

Never let it be said that the United States Department of Commerce doesn't like to cut loose every now and again:

To have a little fun on April Fools’ Day, the Commerce website has an Easter Egg that we welcome folks to find. It shouldn’t be too hard for anyone who played Contra on the original NES. (hint: up, up, down, down…)

Before you say, 'um, shouldn't they be, like, working?,' there's a moral to this story:

Because our website is built upon the open-source platform Drupal, we are able to take advantage of the work of others to improve our website like our photo slideshow and commenting features. That even includes whimsical “improvements” like today’s Easter Egg. We used the Konami Code module to implement the Asteroid-action JavaScript.

In other words, thanks to open source, it didn't take much time at all. Bonus: it turns out to be actually rather fun. Enjoy. (A little help.)
