Newt's Missing Tweets

BY Nancy Scola | Thursday, March 24 2011

Vanity Fair's Juli Weiner finds that the pre-July 2010 Twitter posts of presidential possibility Newt Gringrich have been disappeared from the Internet.

Now, I know what you're thinking: Ahh, but what about that Library of Congress project to archive every public tweet since 2006? Nope. Oppo researchers working on Gingrich won't have much luck there, it seems. Martha Anderson, the director of the LOC's National Digital Information Infrastructure and Preservation Program tells me this afternoon that tweets scrubbed by a user won't be reflected in the Library of Congress archives, which is being constructed as a living, updated database. Per the terms of their agreement with Twitter Inc., says Anderson, "we have to honor the deleted tweet."

As for the launch of that Library of Congress Twitter archive, Anderson describes it as a work in progress and a technical challenge. At the moment, the LOC is getting daily batches of tweets in from Twitter.
