Russia's Medvedev Tweets on Seed Campaign

BY Nancy Scola | Friday, August 13 2010

Here's an update on that campaign to draw attention to the possible destruction of an important Russian seed bank, covered here. Russian President Dmitri Medvedev's office took to Twitter about an hour ago to announce that he's directed his government to look into the matter:

(The "Civic Chamber" of which @KremlinRussia_E speaks is, it seems, a kinda odd quasi-governmental body in Russia where Russian citizens are given a role in keeping check on the government.)

Paul Selker, who is working with the Global Crop Diversity Trust in leading the social media push against the selling off of the Pavolv land to a developer, says the involved organizers are happy with the announcement, but reminds that this is a hint, not a decision. "Every letter, every signature, every email, every tweet counts," reads the Global Crop Diversity Trust blog this morning, "and we now have proof they are being noticed in the Kremlin." (Updated slightly to clarify a few details.)
