Clearing the Cache: Everyone Say, "Hiiiiii, Dmitry"

BY Nancy Scola | Wednesday, June 23 2010

  • President of Russia Dmitry Medvedev joins up on Twitter, at @KremlinRussia_E, while on a California tour that has included stops at Apple, Cisco, and yes, Twitter HQ. (In the photo above, Medvedev is flanked at Twitter HQ by Twitter's Biz Stone and Ev Williams, with what appears to be San Francisco mayor Gavin Newsom to Williams's left.) So, what does a Russian President tweet when he's tweeting for the very first time? Apparently, "Hello everyone! I'm on Twitter, and this is my first tweet." (Thoughts on what it means that the President of Russia is tweeting in English?)
  • The Obama White House is quick with a warm welcome to the Twitterverse.
  • The Obama White House is also quick with a hearty cheer on the U.S. men's national soccer team's last-minute victory over Algeria. What does a White House tweet when it's tweeting out sports congratulations? Apparently, "USA USA USA #teamusa #worldcup USA USA USA."
  • "Are you sure you want to do this?" The email record of World Cup bets between English and American diplomats.
  • Utah Attorney General Mark Shurtleff announces an impending execution via tweet, and then follow it up with the note, "We will be streaming live my press conference as soon as I'm told [the prisoner] is dead."
  • "How iPad-style tablets could help educate millions and trim bureaucracy."
  • Mashable has a look at Elena Kagan's mailbox.
  • And write a wicked blog post about Independence Day to win Red Sox tickets from Senator Scott Brown's office.
