Quote of the Day: On Madison's Tweets

BY Nancy Scola | Thursday, May 6 2010

Howard Chandler Christy's Scene at the Signing of the Constitution of the United States

What historian today wouldn't give his right arm to have the adult Madison's contemporaneous Twitters about the secret debates inside the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia?

-- That's historian Michael Beschloss in a Washington Post piece on the Library of Congress' plan to archive Twitter. It's an interesting argument for a historian to make, given that James Madison, along with the rest of the participants in the Constitutional Convention, maintained a strict code of secrecy throughout the long, hot Philadelphia summer it took to write the Constitution -- and many historians suggest that there's a good chance that the document couldn't have been otherwise.
