Playing Accountant With California's Budget Crisis

It is easy to be an armchair critic of government spending. When you're not on the ground, solving budget deficits is simply a matter of "cutting pork": governments spend money left and right! Finding places to save should be easy.
This is why I love the LA Times' State Budget Balancer. It engages the public in a civic issue, while tacitly explaining to them that it's not so easy to solve. Admittedly, this tool is limited in the number of cuts and taxes that it offers you (as many users have pointed out), but I imagine many other users are now more conscious of what's at stake.
