Vietnamese Dissident Bloggers Handed Heavy Jail Sentences

BY Lisa Goldman | Monday, September 24 2012

Vietnam has sentenced three dissident political bloggers to harsh jail sentences, reports Reporters Without Borders.

Nguyen Van Hai (who used the blog name of Dieu Cay) was sentenced to 12 years in prison followed by five years of house arrest. Ta Phong Tan, a female blogger, was sentenced to 10 years in prison followed by five years of house arrest. And Phan Thanh Hai (known by the blog name ofAnhbasg), the only one to plead guilty, got 4 years in prison followed by three years of house arrest.

TechPresident reported on the arrest and trial of the bloggers last month — including the despair that drove the mother of one of the bloggers to commit suicide by immolation.
