Running for Mayor in Tech-Driven New York, Christine Quinn Launches an App

Leading New York City mayoral candidate City Council Speaker Christine Quinn has launched a mobile web and smart phone application that promises to offer updates on her proposals and campaign and a way for supporters to share their own ideas.

According to a press release, the IDEAS app offers video, photo, and Twitter feeds with updates on Quinn's policy work and campaign events, and will provide push notifications when the campaign unveils a new policy. Quinn announced the application at a New York City Apple Store and on Twitter.

Currently, the application is available in HTML 5 format at app.quinnfornewyork.com, and will be available as a download for Android and iPhone smartphones in the next several days.

The idea echoes the many campaign applications that featured during the 2012 campaign, most prominently from both the Obama and the Romney campaigns. The design of this application currently appears very basic -- the section to submit ideas to the campaign opens an e-mail to the campaign.

In connection with the app announcement, Quinn, a Democrat, also announced some new policy proposals including the installation of countdown clocks outside of subway stations, adopting gunshot sensing technology, and creating a task force to help international businesses and entrepreneurs invest and create jobs in New York City, such as by helping employees apply for temporary visas.

On Twitter, her campaign supplements her official accounts with the account @CQRapidResponse, which frequently reposts tweets from other prominent New Yorkers supporting her positions, especially during debates.

Opponents of Quinn recently launched an ad campaign against her, with TV ads pointing to the website and social media presence NYC Is Not For Sale.

Meanwhile, more longshot candidates Adolfo Carrion, Jr., on the Independence Party line, and Democrat Sal Albanese, have been frequently advertising through promoted tweets and sponsored Facebook posts.

And not-yet-declared, but possible mayoral candidate Anthony Weiner also recently relaunched his Twitter presence, posting links to to his own ideas, in the form of his revised 20-page manifest, "Keys to the City," hosted by Uberflip.
