House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi has hired Faiz Shakir, editor-in-chief of the liberal-leaning Think Progress blog run by the Center for American Progress thinktank, as her new director of new media and senior adviser, the Huffington Post reported. He will be replacing Karina Newton, who plans to travel the world with her husband, according to the Huffington Post.
Since he joined the site in 2005, "he helped build it into an outlet not just for progressive policy analysis but also for breaking, often oppositional, reporting," the Huffington Post noted. Last year, conservatives launched FreeBeacon.com to imitate the site, according to the article.
"Faiz leaves us in an incredibly strong position in terms of the deep reservoir of talent he has recruited to the blog and a record-setting March with 4.7 million unique visitors," said Center for American Progress' Action Fund president, Tom Periello, in an email to staff, according to the Huffington Post. Judd Legum, who had founded the blog before working on Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign and running for state office, will become the new editor-in-chief, and Igor Volsky will become deputy editor.
Shafir has previously worked as a legislative aide to Sen. Bob Graham (D-Fla.), a communications aide in the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy, and as a research associate for the Democratic National Committee.
