In his weekly address, President Barack Obama praised the House of Representatives for passing the American Clean Energy and Security Act last night. This historic piece of legislation will lessen our dependence on foreign oil and spark a clean energy transformation in our economy that will create millions of new American jobs -- jobs that are critical to building a new foundation for our economy.

Earlier today President Obama spoke by phone with Senator Arlen Specter who declared he was switching to the Democratic Party, after realizing that his party of more than 40 years had grown out of touch with everyday Americans. Specter, who was one of three Republicans to support the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, said that vote caused an irreconcilable “schism” between him and his party.

This morning, President Obama will be at Georgetown University to deliver a major speech on the economy, outlining how each step his administration has taken to confront the economic crisis fits within the broader vision of moving the economy from recession to recovery and ultimately to prosperity. The President's speech is scheduled to begin at 11:30 AM EST. We'll have more from Georgetown shortly.

The special election to fill the open Congressional seat in New York's 20th district is tomorrow -- Tuesday, March 31st. For weeks now volunteers have been canvassing and phonebanking to help Get Out The Vote in what's expected to be an extremely close race. Earlier this evening, President Obama sent a message to his supporters in NY-20, reminding them why he endorsed Scott Murphy last week:
