Liveblogging the first MTV/MySpace dialogue
By Joshua Levy, 09/27/2007 - 12:28pm

1:35: You can view the number of participants here. Micah: "It appears that's the number for all the questions, i just tried sharing it from a different question start." So, if 23,305 voted...is that a total number of votes or views? Let's give them the benefit of the doubt and say it's individual views."

1:34: Micah: "aha, metadata! 23,305 views of the Sept 27 Live Ballot"

1:33: Micah: "sweet, they got the overall vote results on each question up as soon as the debate was over. kudos to Flektor, whatever that is."

1:31: Micah: "hmm. i would like a "neutral" option, or an "i don't know" option. he said, 'If everyone agrees with you, you're not saying much.' So what does it say that 90% of the people watching agreed with him?"

1:30: What does JE tell the 6% of people who disagree with him or don't think he answered the questions? Enter stump speech. A solid 6% continues to think he has the wrong ideas or is out of touch.

1:28: Environment. More than 90% think he's answered the questions, understands reality, or has good ideas. "It's time for us to patriotic for something other than war," he said. The students like that; they seem in tune with his environmental policies.

1:23: Stem cell research. More people, about 12%, think he has the wrong ideas.

1:22: Cillizza: What are the specific differences between your plan and Clinton and Obama's? 88% thinks he either answered the question or like his idea.

1:18: This is a great tool for the campaigns. They can judge the effectiveness of the candidates' positions in real time.

1:17: A rebuttal. "Do you think universal coverage would take away from peoples' responsibility to keep themselves healthy." Wha?

1:15: New topic! Universal health care. Immediately, 70%... 75%... 77%... 82% say "good ideas."

1:14: bin Laden is still at large, on Bush's watch. More people think he "understands reality" and less that he has "good ideas."

1:12: Micah: "drat, just lost the sound. this reminds me of when i tried to watch President Clinton's testimony to the Kenneth Starr using a dialup connection...you get the gist of it but every now and then you lose it all."

1:10 Iraq. Mini-lesson about differences between Shia and Sunni Muslims. A few more people, about 15%, think he has the wrong ideas or is out of touch about Iraq.

1:08: Terrorism. He rejects the terminology of the war on terror. 56% like it. Micah: "interesting how many people think he "understands reality" rather than "answered question" on the question about the war on terror. Hey, they just took it away! I think it was about 26% who said he understands reality."

1:05: 63% think he's answering the questions well, only 6% think he hasn't answered the questions or is out of touch.

1:04: Micah: "uh oh, a commercial for the Knight Foundation's grant program..." Josh: "Yeah, but it's only one! Now we're back."

1:03: It's a break. Time to vote for how well JE has done so far. Micah: "nice touch, if you haven't voted they warn you to vote before time runs out."

1:02: Micah: "i've logged out of me.dium, it wasn't doing anything for me. too bad. too bad we can't vote on the questions, too."

1pm: Darfur and China, new voting.

12:58: Micah: "this process could get really interesting when some of the other candidates are on.
I'd like to see Edwards deal with more than softball questions."

12:57: Global poverty and the ONE campaign. The "Good ideas" votes are getting higher and higher. This is clearly his strong point.

12:55: Micah: "Oh good, I can vote again. Looks like people thought he answered the question about foreclosures rather than dodging it."

12:54: Shnazerati asks via IM about investments in companies foreclosing on houses in New Orleans.

12:52: 63% like's JE's response to Katrina.

12:50: Looks like that the graph refreshing is intentional, so it coincides with the questions. I want to know how many people are voting.

12:49: A new chart! A new questions about Katrina. "We don't need a surge in Iraq, we need a surge in New Orleans." Looks like that concludes the education section.

12:48: After a browser refresh, still no update on the chart. Sigh. That was fun! I want more!

12:47: Inner city violence, still viewing responses to education. Micah: "i don't think medium's chat room feature is working...i'm in the edwards room and it's not updating"

12:45: We're on the third or fourth question but no update in the voting chart.

12:43: Lunargoddesb asks by IM, "are you increasing our taxes by paying for college for everyone?" JE: "Yes." Over $250,000 would raise the capital gains rate.

12:42: "We have to recognize as a nation that we have a responsibility to promote arts education..." no update on that approval chart.

12:38: Micah: "if you mouse over the pie chart it gives you the % of each in javascript. Nice."

12:37: Washington Post's Chris Cillizza reviews the stats thus far and shows us the widget. JE asks, "how do I read this thing"

12:35: There's a cool widget below the video that lets you vote on the answer. About half of viewers like JE's answers on education.

12:34: Micah: "Looks like they knew in advance that this question would be on education, since the 'tell us what you think' tool had that loaded in."

12:32: Diversity in schools. JE: We want all "scholars" represented in the curriculum. But presidents don't set the curriculum. America needs to create financial incentives... camera toggles back between SuChin Pak and Edwards.

12:29: "to install MySpaceIM it "Requires MS Windows 98/2000/XP/Vista and Internet Explorer 5.0 or higher." Sorry Mac users. It's fine; I don't know any college students or tech folks who use Macs anyway.

12:28pm We're liveblogging the MTV/MySpace "dialogue" with John Edwards... nothing's going on yet; it's like listening to the pilots speak before liftoff.

Instafeedback

For sheer interactivity, I have to rate this a home run, though there were many glitches. Mac users have to be frustrated, because the MySpaceIM tool doesn't work on Macs. The video and audio sometimes froze, and the "Tell us what you think" widget was stuck sometimes, and you had to refresh your browser. But I love that Edwards saw the real time feedback, and there's no question this will get better with time. Hat tip to all the folks at MySpace and MTV!

RE: 12:35 gradation

shades of green are like/he answered the question
shades of red are dislike/he dodged the question

if you total up the shades of green it's 85%
the two shades that represent statements of favorability equal 73%

not 50%

In the moment

Fred - I was pointing out the numbers at the moment I saw them; they changed throughout the event.
