Our Favorite Videos of the Week: No Online McCain-iana [UPDATE]
By Joshua Levy, 02/15/2008 - 11:34am

The influence of Will.i.am’s hugely popuar “Yes We Can” video is inspiring parodies amd homages (“parages”!) and is probably responsible for a wave of cheesy, but well-meaning, pro-candidate videos sweeping across the web. But they’re almost all coming from the left. Does Final Cut Pro only work on computers owned by progressives? Or is it something in the water?

Below are a few videos that are either inspired by “Yes We Can,” or try to convey its positive message in favor of Barack Obama or Hillary Clinton. Where are the rightroots videomakers? We’ve come across no voter-generated videos in support of John McCain. Is he polarizing the right, is there a lack of energy, or what? This can’t bode well for the presumptive nominee’s campaign if there’s zero online citizen activity on his behalf.

[UPDATE] The McCain campaign may have one answer to this problem, which is to get Adsense to plug a banner ad to the campaign's videos wherever a reference to mccain and video appears--such as to the right of this post!

NO, YOU CAN’T — NO SE PUEDE.

This new video by the old(!) Billionaires for Bush crowd is the latest “parage” to hit YouTube in the wake of Will.i.am’s hugely popular “Yes We Can.” And it’s pretty snarky. Almost 16,000 views on YouTube.

john.he.is

Another “Yes We Can” parody — this one from the always funny Andy Cobb — imagines what a McCain version of the video might look like. In Cobb’s view, the actors in the video wouldn’t be able to make it past the first refrain of “Bomb Bomb Iran.” The video has really taken off, and has been viewed more than 1,000,000 times on YouTube, causing Andy and co. to get the full CNN treatment.

Hillary4U&Me

In one Newsweek writer’s words, this uplifting pro-Hillary tune, which has enjoyed a rebirth in the wake of the “Yes We Can” phenomonenon, “sounds sort of like a commercial jingle for a used futon store circa 1979, only less catchy.” To us it sounds more like a Midwestern high-school band’s attempt to cover Sly and the Family Stone. More than 240,000 views on YouTube.

Hope Changes Everything

Apparently inspired by the optimism and monochrome palette of “Yes We Can,” the makers of this pro-Obama video produced this semi-saccharine ode to their guy. Hope is most definitely in the air (and it changes everything), but not much else is. Almost 29,000 views on YouTube.

John McCain’s Double Talk Express: A Day At The Beach

There may not be any voter-generated videos in support of John McCain, but the left is already getting started with its video oppo (voppo?). This week YouTuber DemRapidResponse, who has been compiling clips of Republican candidates for months, released this attack of John McCain’s support for the Iraq war and his “straight talk” persona. Almost 24,000 views on the YouTubes.

NewsBusted Conservative Comedy, 139

We stumbled upon this conservative comedy show that’s actually moderately funny (even though it’s conservative, wink wink). We’re not sure if the laugh track is necessary, but the Newsbusted folks are managing to do what few conservatives have — create comedy on par with their liberal colleagues. This episode was viewed 95,000 times on YouTube.

GOP Convention Names Google Official Innovation Provider

To celebrate and publicize Google being named the “Official Innovation Provider” of the 2008 Republican National Convention, the convention organizers produced this slick video with an intro that looks awfully like a Google Earth zoom. Nice work — maybe it will get the fire brewing among the rightroots.
