No That's Not Sheldon Silver
BY Nancy Scola | Friday, March 5 2010
I was this close to calling New York Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver's office to that @ShellySilver isn't really his Twitter account, when I thought to myself, come on now, really. Let's put on our critical thinking pants.
What prompt this self-exchange was how a few different folks retweeted a note from Silver, who, amidst the slow-motion collapse of self-government in New York, has emerged, somewhat amazingly, as one of the last men standing. Supposedly, Silver tweeted this:
@ShellySilver: But I'll still be running NY state government. RT @GovernorPaterson: "I'll be governor tomorrow."
Provocative! And really, pretty ridiculous. Calling to confirm what should be pretty obvious might, in a normal time, look like good reportorial instincts. But today, it looks a lot like wasting the time of people working on taxpayer dollars who should (hopefully!) have more important work to do.
So let's dive into @ShellySilver's record and see if we can't come up with independent confirmation. Do we think the New York State Assembly Speaker tweeted this?
Deal with it, Starquest... I'm New York's pre-eminent statesman. You're a 75-year-old blogger.
Or this?
A story of Albany dysfunction and disgrace... and I'm not in it!?
Or this?
I'm new to this Tweety thing. Does @NYYRC really think I'm going to become a member or are they f'ing with me?
Of course not. Right? Well, crazier things have happened in politics, and I'm not about to say for 100% that Mr. Silver didn't suddenly lose his sense and start tweeting absurdities. Lucky for me, I don't really have to call Silver's office, because someone did it first -- a reporter from Rochester's 13WHAM. She tweeted:
Speaker Silver's office just told me @shellysilver is a FAKE Twitter page. It's not him.
For her troubles, Fake Shelly give her a ribbing:
For this, you called my office?
