NASA Settles L'Affair Colbert
BY Nancy Scola | Thursday, April 16 2009
As we noted in the past, comedian Stephen Colbert swamped the competition in the popular vote part of NASA's online contest to name the International Space State's newest module. Contest rules, though, allowed the space agency to be the final arbiter of what the ISS gets named, stating that "NASA reserves the right to ultimately select a name in accordance with the best interests of the agency, its needs, and other considerations." And NASA ultimately decided to opt for the more traditional "Tranquility." But! Demonstrating a bit of bureaucratic humor, astronaut Sunita Williams went on the "Colbert Report" to announce that a treadmill on the space station will be christened the "Combined Operational Load Bearing External Resistance Treadmill." Or, that's right, the COLBERT.
This Colbert will be launched into space this August.
