FL judicial panel finds Facebook friendship counts for something

Interesting case down in Florida, where a judicial ethics board wrestled with just what it really means when judges become Facebook friends with lawyers. The New York Times John Schwartz has the story. Is it improper fraternization? Or just a matter of collegial, and harmless, networking? A minority argued that accepting someone's friend request on Facebook isn't that big of a deal, simply an acknowledgment that someone is your contact or acquaintance. Facebook friendship isn't, argued the losing side, like real friendship. It doesn't necessarily reflect "feelings of affection or personal regard."
Not so, found the majority of the Florida Judicial Ethics Advisory Committee.
Being Facebook friends is a bigger deal than that. It "reasonably conveys to others the impression that these lawyer 'friends' are in a special position to influence the judge." Now you know.
