Favorite Videos of the Week: YouTube Nation Stands Behind Huck

BY Joshua Levy | Friday, February 29 2008

Mike Huckabee continues to hang in there, and YouTube nation is behind him. A video from a family of Huck supporters is possibly the most wholesome thing we’ve ever seen on YouTube. Also, new videos for Barack Obama continue to break musical boundaries (sort of), a robot voices its anger at Ralph Nader, and the metal/rap/punk crowd still adores Ron Paul. Boo-yah!

9. Message To Ralph Nader

Andy Cobb constructs a robotic voice (hmm…, isn’t that the Mac OS X voice generator?) to tell Ralph Nader that he won’t be getting his support in 2008. Full of witty one-offs (“Doesn’t Obama make you cry sometimes? He totally makes us cry sometimes”), it’s among Cobb’s finest work. About 63,000 views on YouTube.

8. We Are The Ones

Good marketers know how to milk something for all it’s worth. Will.i.am is back with a sequel to his insanely popular “Yes We Can,” this one fully stocked with even more Hollywood stars — Jessica Alba, John Leguizamo, Macy Gray, Luis Guzman, and Ryan Phillippe all show up — covering all shades of the color spectrum. The song has the same “I feel good for some reason” vibe to it, but it also comes across as more self-satisfied than the original.

7. VIVA OBAMA 2008

Perhaps it’s my weakness for corridos (Mexican ballads), but I can’t stop listening to this call to Spanish-speaking Texans to vote for Obama. From Amigos de Obama, the folks who brought us the Obama Reggateton song. More than 300,000 views on YouTube.

6. Then & Now

Who is that dashing man talking about Americans’ lack of faith in their leadership? Well I’ll be… it’s Mike Gravel, circa 1971! Almost 6,000 views on YouTube.

5. Mike Huckabee and the rest of the nation

A wholesome American family serenades Mike Huckabee, singing their own version of the dorm-room classic “Breakfast at Tiffany’s.” Mother and daughter provide perfect harmonies, while the son capably holds his own on guitar. How can McCain go on in the face of such opposition? About 3,000 views on YouTube.

4. Lewis Black - Leave Mike Huckabee Alone

At first, Black’s impression of Chris Cocker — the “Leave Britney Alone!” guy — was annoying. But with repeated viewings, Black’s defense of Huckabee (“all he wants to do is be president!”) started to be funny. Especially the drool at the end. More than 19,000 views on YouTube.

3. Mike Huckabee on SNL

Huckabee is funnier than most of the cast of SNL, and it shows. Although he has little to no chance of capturing the Republican nomination, he’s still trucking along. Viewed 180,000 times on YouTube.

2. Aimee Allen’s Unofficial Ron Paul Revolution Video

The rock/goth/punk/metal/rap crowd gets another Ron Paul anthem. Lines like “The Patriot Act took our liberties/And there’s no judge and no jury” are punctured with shouts of “boo-yah!” before his Paulness himself arrives, suitably fired up. This version was viewed more than 9,000 times on YouTube, but there are a bunch of other versions out there.

1. You Choose ‘08 primary review :: The Democrats

YouTube news and politics editor Steve Grove rounds up the best YouTube moments from the Democratic candidates. It’s fun to walk down memory lane as we view bits from Joe Biden, Chris Dodd, Bill Richardson, and Dennis Kucinich. Was that only last year? It feels like they ran in 1988. More than 1,000 views on YouTube.

What Twitter Won't Tell You About the Election

A new study released on Tuesday by the Pew Research Center for the People & the Press on Tuesday offers the opportunity to get real about what the political conversation on Twitter and Facebook can — or can't — tell you about the progression of the 2012 political campaign. Pew has found that even among users of Twitter and Facebook, a paltry percentage of people use social networks to get news about politics: Only 24 percent of Twitter users in the sample and 25 percent of Facebook users said they "sometimes" got campaign news through that network, while a full 40 percent of Twitter users in the sample and 46 percent of other social media users reported "never" getting campaign news through either Twitter or Facebook. Fidel Castro Loves the Internet

“The Internet is a revolutionary instrument that permits the receiving and transmission of ideas, in both directions, that is something we should know how to use,” Fidel Castro told a crowd of supporters on Feb. 4, according to the state-owned Cuban newspaper Granma International. Castro, who made his first public appearance since April 2011, launched his two-volume memoir, “Guerilla of Time,” and took the opportunity to discuss issues of importance to him. Earlier this week, Miranda Neubauer reported that one of these topics was the need for the Internet. Castro has been a proponent of the Internet as a tool for the exchange of ideas since 2003, but the average Cuban citizen faces great difficulty getting online. GO
