DIY Voter Guides for the Left of Us
BY Nancy Scola | Thursday, October 21 2010
We've been nibbling at the edges of the idea that there's untapped potential in people using the web to help other like-minded people figure out how to vote, especially in the obscure races and initiatives that pop up on the ballot. That idea's now a website, at least for progressives. The curious but strangely logical pairing of former White House green guy Van Jones and Billy Wimsatt, best known for his 1999 Bomb the Suburbs book, has announced this afternoon the launch of the new TheBallot.org:
Instead of wasting precious time getting offended by right-wing hypocrisy -- or even worse, responding with offensive anti-Christian bigotry -- please go check out www.TheBallot.org. Think of it like Wikipedia for progressive voter guides. The more people participate, the better it gets.
The Ballot's meant to host the voter guides of the usual suspects of progressive groups, including labor and issue advocacy groups. But the extra bit is that it also offers the ability for informed citizens to roll their own voter guides that they can then send to their family and friends. Seems a smart move.
Update: You open the doors, and people are going to mess around. This user-submitted voter guide supposedly from Planned Parenthood Hawaii actually links to the endorsement slate of Hawaii Right to Life. Here's guessing that the two groups would differ on one or two things.
