Congress Can't Hear You
BY Nancy Scola | Wednesday, October 27 2010
Citizen-lobbying of Congress is a broken system, if it can be called that having never really worked that well in the first place.
The Sunlight Foundation's (my bad -- Jake is no longer with Sunlight) Jake Brewer offers a thought-provoking call to discussion on how you remedy a system where the actual and considerable educational function of paid lobbyists for industry and other big players is matched only by a tsunami of repetative communications that serve at best as a measure of public sentiment, but do little to convince or equip even the most willing of congressional allies -- a system where meaningful citizen engagement with a Hill office through the publically available channels counts as an "extraordinary victory." A very good question, and a very good read.
